Have your say about Digital Driver Licences, Regos etc

The Regulatory Systems (Transport) Amendment Act 2026 (RSTA) updated transport law in May 2026 to:

• recognise digital driver licences, alongside physical licences
• enable electronic alternatives to displaying physical vehicle licences and labels, and
• allow more communications and notices to be issued electronically

NZTA now need to update the Land Transport Rules and regulations, and make transport instruments, to put these changes into practice.

NZTA are consulting so the new law can be used, and people know how the changes will work in practice.
The consultation document presents 3 proposals on how digital service options could be introduced and used. The proposed changes will give people more choice and more convenient
secure ways to access vehicle information and reduce delays and paperwork.

NZTA are calling for submissions regarding further aspects of modernising their systems and processes.

Further details, including consultation documents and the online submission form can be found here.  Submissions close on August 12th 2026
