Our History – The Jury List

One of the annual tasks undertaken by Justices of the Peace in April was confirmation of the list of males from which jurors were selected for court trials. Police compiled the list of local men between the ages of 21 and 60 and it was up to Justices, acting as a panel, to ensure only appropriate names were included,  striking out anyone not qualified, lunatics, imbeciles and any person disabled by deafness, blindness or other permanent infirmities. The Justices had to deliver the list to the Sheriff before April 23 each year, ready for subsequent Supreme Court trials.
