OUR HISTORY – Medallion…But Not For Mayors
It was determined in late 1935 that the medallion worn by Justices of the Peace could not be worn by those, such as Mayors, who were made Justices ex officio, by virtue of their office. “The title Chief Magistrate (and therefore Justice of the Peace) is purely honorary, and connotes no judicial position,” the Royal Federation of Justices of the Peace Association legal adviser said, “so there is no doubt: there is no entitlement to having the Society’s medallion”. The Mayor of One Tree Hill, Israel Joseph Goldstine, OBE challenged the opinion but found it was correct.
