NOTES FROM FEBRUARY COUNCIL MEETING

The Council of the Auckland Justices of the Peace Association held its first monthly meeting for the year on February 10, 2021.

  •  The new Registrar, Bruce Kilmister, was welcomed to the role, and his first Council Meeting.  He confirmed that the outgoing Registrar, Janet Thompson, was being generous with her time to help make the changeover as smooth as possible.
  • The new AJPA website was launched in January and brings a clearer, cleaner look; with updated material and layout.  Significantly, we are in full control of the content that can be updated by our own, non-coding Webmaster (currently Frank Rands, who is largely responsible for the transformation).
  • HUB professional development dates for the year were tabled – and are on the website as well as with each Support Group Coordinator.
  • Printed copies of the 2020 Manual are now in the hands of Support Group Coordinators for distribution.  It is also available from the websites, (including, AJPA’s website, in flip-book format).  Try it! It is easy to search for the electronic version.
  • The programme for the Support Groups meeting (Saturday, March 6) was confirmed.  Attendance responses are due by February 22 – to the Registrar
  • The Royal Federation’s Conference and AGM, to be held in Wellington February 26-28 were discussed.  Thanks to sponsorship by the Royal Federation, 10 additional members from Auckland (and from other regions) will be attending, to experience the national forum.  Auckland’s responses to remits and notices of motion have been agreed upon for voting purposes
  • 21 Justices took part in the February accreditation study group, and are completing their assessment test.
  • ‘Find a JP’ on the updated Royal Federation website is still causing concern, particularly with agencies not finding JPs who have done work for a client, because that JP is currently unavailable and not showing on the list.  A letter has been sent to the Royal Federation raising concerns, and suggesting possible solutions.  At the same time, work is going on to make it easier for a client to locate a local Justice.
  • Some 15% of AJPA members have still not paid their membership fee, set and due after the AGM in September.
  • The February meeting was lengthy but achieved a great deal.
