Notes from Council Meeting – September 2022

The Council of the Auckland Justices of the Peace Association met on September 14, 2022.

  • The Royal Federation’s tribute to Queen Elizabeth ll was included in our papers. Respect and admiration were expressed by Council members.
  • Covid has made aspects of JP work very challenging, so the government’s removal of mask requirements and vaccine mandates was welcomed.  Masks will remain a matter of personal preference for Justices and clients.
  • Most Service Desks have now reopened, with some changes in location and some reduced hours. ‘Locate a JP’ always provides the most current information.
  • A major review has been completed on the listings in Yellow (Pages) for Auckland members. Over 80% of those listings were incorrect or no longer valid.  Members are advised to check their own listings frequently.  AJPA does not encourage Justice to seek a listing in Yellow, as out-of-date information gets ‘stuck’ in print.  Also, the majority of our clients now use other sources to find JP services.
  • New Zealand Post has CLOSED the set of post boxes used by your Association.  A new PO Box 91222 has been opened.
  • Numbers for  October Swearing-in dates remain small, as there is a backlog of Provisional Justices awaiting Gazzetting prior to that ceremony.
  • Plans for our Regional Conference and AGM to be held at Alexandra Park on September 25 are being finalised, as the penultimate event in our Centenary year. The roles of President, Vice President and Regional Representative were uncontested; but an election will be held at the AGM for 8 positions on Council (Council members have a 2-year term, so some are seeking re-election).
  • The Regional Conference takes place on the first day of NZ Summer Time – clocks will have moved FORWARD one hour earlier that morning – so don’t get caught out and be an hour late!  To register for the conference please email the Registrar at registrar@jpauckland.org.nz
  • Centenary bumper stickers are available from Support Group Coordinators and material for a local media outlet to focus on a local JP volunteer has also been provided to Support Group Coordinators.
  • The final celebration of our Centenary year will be the Centenary Dinner on October 15, at the Royal NZ Yacht Squadron.  Plans are being finalised, and there are still some tickets available at a subsidised price – If you would like to find out more or register for the dinner please click this LINK and you will be taken directly to the registration form.  We look forward to you joining other JPs in this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to celebrate Justices who have served Auckland for 100 years.
