Answer to Question # 27
When certifying a copy of an identification document for Anti-Money Laundering and Countering Financing of Terrorism (AML-CFT) purposes, what additional step is required compared to certifying an ordinary copy?
A) The Justice of the Peace must verify the originality of the document with the issuing agency.
B) The Justice of the Peace must compare the person to the image in their identification document to verify true likeness
C) The Justice of the Peace must charge a fee for this specialized service
D) The Justice of the Peace only needs to sight the original document
Answer B For the Justice to be able to complete this task
- The owner of the identity document (eg Passport or Driver Licence) MUST be present,
- the document MUST be signed
- the document MUST be current and
- the copy presented MUST be a true and complete copy.
The Justice MUST certify the image on the copy which contains the photograph, and state that the photograph represents at true likeness/represents the identity of the client who presents it.
The words used should either be those requested by the agency which requires the Identity Verification, or the Justice could use an AML stamp.
The image of the reverse side of the Driver Licence, which shows the expiry date, should be certified with a standard Certified Copy stamp (because it does not contain a photograph)
